Weekend Swamp Rock

I've just picked up my 6au6 tremelo tube (which I ordered from Vintage Guitars in New Orleans). Having earlier purchased a 6x4 rectifier tube, Groove Tube 12ax7 preamp tubes, and Electro Harmonix 6v6 tubes, the 1482 re-tubing project is complete. Just in time for a weekend jam at the Sirloin. The Tascam will be fired up and we'll see what we can get down on tape. I'll post the results. In the meantime check out Sacalait's soundclick site for mp3 updates!

The amp on top is a Fender X-15 solid state practice amp. Believe it or not, at bedroom volumes I can get some pretty damn usable clean tones from it. It was originally purchased as part of a starter pack which included my MIJ "Wayne's World" Strat. There are some truly heinous Sacalait recordings in existence with me playing this amp with the gain and volume set to 10. Icepick in ear. What the hell did I know, I was just learning how to play.

Below we have my beloved Silvertone 1482 built by Sears and Roebuck in the mid 60's. It's got two 6v6s and two 12ax7s. Not worth a damn for clean tones but you should hear it growl when the volume nob goes past 5.

Here are my effects pedals. My signal goes from right to left. First in line is my Ibanez TS7 Tubescreamer. It's got a handy little mode switch with a "hot" setting that's pretty useful. I mostly use it as a clean boost by leaving the drive setting around 1 or 2 and cranking the level. Next is my Dunlop Cry-baby wah pedal. Essential for funk licks. This is followed by a DOD Stereo Phaser and Arion Stereo Delay. Sometimes I'll set the phaser for a slow swoosh which I'll kick on when I want it. Other times I'll set it and forget it on a shallow shimmer. I picked up the delay pedal at a second hand music store for $15 and have been very pleased with it. Eats batteries like nobody's beezniss though.

On the left we have my Samik Corsair bass. I have used this instrument strictly for studio work. It's cheap and gives me some ass-end. What more do you want?

On the right is my MIJ "Waynes' World" Strat. After years and years of using the stock pups I recently dropped in a new pickguard loaded with Fender Fat-50s. Now positions 1 thru 5 all offer different, usable Strat tones which the cheap stock pups lacked. My next upgrade will be a solid maple neck with a larger radius.

Several of our recordings have been done on my Tascam 414 mkII 4-tracker. I like mixing down our master tapes to cassette but have also experimented with mixing down to the hard drive of my computer. Our multi-instrumentalist Bizzy B (aka Bert) has a 424, Tascam's next model up, which features sweepable mids. Several of our shows have been recorded on that device as well.

Sacalait Gear Review

The next several posts will involve a break-down of the equipment that we as a band have employed or are currently using to get and record our unique sound. I'll start things off by featuring my own personal rig and hopefully my Sacalait brothers will round things out by discussing their own equipment.

First up is our workhorse microphone, the Rode NT-1 (pictured below). For the longest time Sacalait band relied on an assortment of cast-off microphones for recording (including the infamous "butt-plug"). They were fine for what they cost and we still sometimes fall back on them when times are tight. But we got to a point where we really wanted a mic that would give us a little more sonic definition, and the Rode NT-1 fit the bill.

We have used it to record vocals and hand percussion. We've set it in the middle of a room and recorded ourselves playing acoustic. We've hung it from rafters and recorded our band rocking out. I've used it to mic my amp close-up. We've been pleased with the results in all applications. This thing will record the sound of a church mouse farting into a thimble from 30 paces. If you want a good condensor mic but don't want to spend much money, buy this one.
